Taylor Woodrow's Civils South team officially open the M3 Bagshot Bridge

The new M3 Bagshot Bridge, designed and constructed by the Taylor Woodrow Civils South team, officially opened on Wednesday 6th August. The bridge, for pedestrians, at Bagshot Heath spans the motorway between junction three at Lightwater and junction four at Frimley.

The opening, organised by National Highways, was highlighted by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Surrey Heath MP Dr Al Pinkerton and the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Louise Ashbery.

A previous bridge at the same site was demolished in 2023 after engineers found issues with its ability to withstand collisions and the risk posed from high vehicles. The new bridge – at 63m (206ft) long, 4m (13.1ft) wide and weighing nearly 100 tonnes – was lifted into place in July after months of construction.

Prior to the opening, dozens of eagerly awaiting walkers, cyclists and interested onlookers gathered on both sides of the bridge, highlighting the importance of the bridge to local communities.  Particularly, to those communities of Bagshot who use the bridge to access the other amenities of Lightwater Country Park.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a reception was held at the Lightwater Country Park Leisure Centre, which featured the time-lapse film of the new bridge being installed over a weekend closure of the M3. National Highways representatives, members of the Taylor Woodrow delivery team and our supply chain partners were on hand to answer questions regarding the design and installation of the new bridge.

Nick Axford, the National Highway’s project manager, said: “We are committed to looking beyond road journeys and supporting more active forms of travel, healthier lifestyles and better local connections. While demolishing the previous structure caused inconvenience, the new bridge is safer, wider, stronger and more suitable for cyclists – and we hope it will be enjoyed by everyone.”

Haitham Telou, Contracts Manager on the M3 Bagshot Project, said:  “It was a fantastic piece of engineering, showcasing the robust coordination and perseverance of all parties, which led to the bridge being installed and the M3 being reopened ahead of schedule.”

Thank you to our dedicated delivery team and supply chain partners – Ramboll, NuSteel and Carney Construction for their expertise and collaboration throughout this project.
