Whipps Cross unveils Multistorey Car Park

The first stage of Whipps Cross Hospital’s redevelopment has been completed with the opening of a brand-new multistorey car park.

Delivered on time and within budget as part of the national New Hospital Programme, the facility provides 500 spaces in total with 50 accessible bays and 100 electric vehicle charging points, supporting the Trust’s commitment to sustainable travel.

The car park was officially opened on Thursday 30 October by the MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan Smith, and will be available to staff and visitors from 6am on Monday 3 November.

Constructed by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, it will allow Barts Health NHS Trust to close its temporary staff car park, which will become the site of the new hospital.

Amanjit Jhund, chief executive of Whipps Cross Hospital said: “It is great to see the new multi-storey car park for Whipps Cross completed on time and within budget. I am grateful to everyone who has made this a reality.

“We were all disappointed when, earlier in the year, we were told that the construction of the new Whipps Cross Hospital was being put back a few years. But this fantastic new car park still represents completion of the first phase of the hospital redevelopment and, now that we can close the temporary car park, we have a site that is ready for construction of long-awaited new healthcare facilities, which our staff and the local people we serve so need.”

Paul Tumelty, regional director of IHP said: “IHP are delighted and proud to have delivered this Multi Storey Car Park. Through a truly open collaborative culture between IHP, our supply chain partners and the Trust the project has raised the bar in multi storey car park delivery setting new standards for quality of delivery. But more importantly, this project has been about much more than just a car park and our purpose here has been to support the Trust in paving the way and enabling their vision of the future hospital.

“IHP are honoured to have been afforded the opportunity to contribute our skills and expertise and allowing a significant step to be taken forward in realising this vision for the people of Waltham Forest and its surrounding neighbourhoods.”

Andre Lourenco, project director of AECOM added: “AECOM is proud to have provided NEC Project Management for the delivery of this sustainable and accessible multi-storey car park, using our technical expertise, maintaining rigorous contract administration, and facilitating a culture of cooperation among the project team.
